French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
